Executive Director's message

Building further resilience, proactivity and adaptability were the focus of the REC’s efforts throughout 2014. Following the guidelines provided by the Board of Directors and the advice of its signatory representatives, the REC has continued with its internal changes. The goal of the process is to create a more flexible and efficient organisation that can deliver targeted support with high added value in the areas of sustainability and environmental issues to all stakeholders across the region and beyond.

The status harmonisation process successfully continued with the signing of a new seat agreement between the Government of Hungary and the REC – renewing the bilateral agreement concluded in 1995 and reflecting the organisation's international legal status. Achieving harmonised status as an international organisation will create more favourable conditions and could open more avenues for resource mobilisation.

Thanks to key donors such as the European Commission, Austria, Finland, Hungary, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and the U.S., the REC was able to conclude successful projects in 2014 and launch new multi-year activities in Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova, Turkey, EU countries and South Eastern Europe.

The REC has remained both a reliable partner and an active stakeholder in regional and global initiatives.  I would like to thank all of our partners for their continuous engagement and support. In 2014 we worked intensively with the Environment and Security Initiative (ENVSEC), the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the Regional Cooperation Council (RCC) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).

Preparations took place for the 25th anniversary of the organisation and the development of the 2016–2020 strategy, involving the REC’s founders and supporters, environmental stakeholders, partners and friends. The new strategy will open a new era, taking the organisation further along the path of consolidation, proactivity and adaptability as it continues to fulfil its mission to assist in addressing environmental issues. Help us to celebrate our first 25 years by becoming our partner in the decades to come!

It is my firm belief that I have a link with the past and a responsibility to the future. I cannot give up. I cannot despair. There's a whole future, generations to come. I have to keep trying.
